Look up the following references in order to see the range of words
used. How is the meaning of Christ's death expressed in these references?

You will remember we said we would touch down and explore certain
aspects of the countryside more closely. We shall do this in looking at
the atonement. Remember that the New Testament writers' explanation of Jesus'
death is made up of many pictures and the whole is more like a landscape
than a portrait: each part must be considered in relation to the total landscape.
Each part is necessary to make the whole picture. No one model of the atonement
can contain the whole truth.
Look up Romans 5:8 and John 3:16. What is ultimately the basis for the atonement?

Model 1:
We will now look at the first model. (There is no particular order of priority
in the models). Look at Colossians 2:15 and John 12:31. What do these verses
suggest to you?

The first model then may be called Victory
over sin and death. Christ's apparent defeat on the cross was turned
to victory. Can you think of any parallels in modern life? In what ways
can we win victories over sin and evil?
